01 Understanding h7 Tolerance

What is h7 Tolerance?

h7 is an ISO 286 tolerance grade representing tight dimensional control for shaft-type components. The "h" indicates the tolerance zone is positioned entirely below the nominal diameter (0 to negative deviation).

Nominal: 10.000mm
Actual Range: 9.985 - 10.000mm
Deviation: 0 / -0.015mm
INTERPRETATION:
Rod diameter will NEVER exceed nominal. Maximum undersizing is 15 microns (0.015mm).

Why h7 Matters for Swiss Lathe

  • Collet Grip Consistency
    Swiss lathes use split collets that require consistent rod diameter. h7 prevents slippage and vibration during high-RPM spindle operation.
  • Tool Life Predictability
    Dimensional variation <15μm means cutting depth remains constant. Eliminates unexpected tool breakage from diameter "jumps".
  • No Mid-Run Adjustments
    CNC programs don't need offset compensation between bars. Same G-code produces identical parts across entire production run.

03 Manufacturing Process: Centerless Grinding

Process Overview

ValidTi h7 rods are produced using centerless grinding, a continuous-feed precision grinding method that removes material uniformly across the entire rod length without requiring center holes.

Step 1: Raw Bar Preparation

Starting material: Hot-rolled Grade 23 ELI bars (h11 tolerance), acid-pickled to remove surface scale.

Step 2: Centerless Grinding

Diamond grinding wheels remove 0.2-0.5mm per side, achieving h7 tolerance and Ra 0.4μm surface finish.

Step 3: 100% Laser Inspection

Every rod passes through laser micrometer (±0.001mm resolution) for full-length dimensional verification.
